World's Faire: Denmark
My mother is from Denmark, so I started the World’s Faire project already knowing the basics about Denmark. For example, I already knew that Legos were created in Denmark, but I did not know who invented them. Which I later learned was Ole Kirk Christiansen a Danish toymaker. This was the case for most the subjects my group and I learned about. My group and I focused in on Legos, taxes/healthcare, and hygge. Which we developed a strong understanding of and were able to articulate this information to others in detail. The item my group and I chose to recreate was the Lego brick which was created in 1932. We chose to recreate the Lego Brick because we wanted to recreate something that was world renown and popular even in today’s society. To make the Lego Brick we create adobe illustrator files to laser cut into 5-millimeter tri-ply wood. We then glued all the pieces together and spray painted multiple layers directly on the completed Lego Bricks. Our final product turned out great and was even able to interlock into the other Lego Bricks we created. I am glad we recreated the Lego Brick because it was a big hit at our exhibition and drew a lot of people's attention.

To create the prototype of the Lego Brick our first step was to make a hollow rectangle out of cardboard. We did this by first drawing the two sides of the Lego that were different lengths and widths. Then we cut out those pieces using a paper cutter to make sure the edges were even. To make the other sides of the rectangle we traced the two sides we already created on the cardboard and then began the whole process of cutting again. Once we had all the pieces we hot glued the edges of the rectangle together. Here comes the more complicated part to make the cylinder knobs on top. To recreate this we cut two strips of cardboard and scored the back to make the cardboard shape into a circle. Then we glued circles on top of the strips and finally glued the knobs to the rectangle creating a prototype of a Lego Brick.

Based on what I saw at our exhibition I would be interested in learning more about Chicago. In the 1800s, Chicago was known for its different and incredible architecture. If I was in this time period I think I would be most interested in the look of the actual place. Plus they created Wrigley's Gum, known today as juicy fruit. Overall Chicago seems like the perfect ratio of old fashion, modern, and futuristic.

I am extremely proud of my booth, product, and overall participation at our exhibition. My booth was “legoed out,” meaning everything was literally lego based. For instance, the tablecloth and poster was lego themed, we displayed the legos we recreated, gave out homemade lego cakes, and even displayed our essays which included aspects of Denmark’s creation of the lego. I feel this made my group and I’s booth really pop and scream for attention. As I have stated before I really like how our Lego Brick recreation turned out. I think that our audience really enjoyed playing with and viewing our recreated version of the Lego Brick. I am also really proud of the participation effort I put into our exhibition. Every person that walked by I would call out something like “come and learn about the happiest place on earth.” This seemed to attract people to the booth so my partner and I could work together to deliver all the information we learned in a fun and interesting way. I am extremely proud of the overall outcome of our exhibition.

I think exhibition went really well, even though one of my group members was unable to come due to having an illness. My partner and I were able to attract people to our booth through chanting and delivered speeches about Denmark in a fun and interesting way. We created a symbiotic relationship that allowed for us to talk to our audience about the topics we were most interested in. For example, my partner talked about how Hans Christian Andersen's inspired many Disney movies while I talked about the happiness brought to people through Hygge. Many people actually came and listened to us and asked questions that we then answered in detail. In conclusion, I feel that exhibition went really well and I would not change a single thing about it.
